Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Happy Labor Day to you, your members, and your families. I hope you have the chance to enjoy this hard won, union holiday safely and in good health.

Labor Day 2020 has brought some unusual circumstances to working men and women in our country. I don't think any of us could've predicted the tragedies that would befall us this year. We are going into our ninth month of a pandemic which has taken tens of thousands of lives and has affected millions more. I know I don't have to tell you how COVID-19 has affected us and our jobs. Millions of Americans are out of work. Millions more have had the way they do their jobs totally changed. From working remotely to taking extra health precautions via taking regular temperatures, using face masks and hand sanitizer, our country has certainly changed this year . . . and not for the better.

On top of the unrelenting health emergency, we are facing racial unrest that has torn apart whole communities. Divisiveness in our country is prevalent and seems to be fed from the top. Nightly, we are faced with news on television with graphic images of people dying and the following peaceful protests being attacked. We are being made aware of continued racial injustice that haunts the daily lives of many Americans who live in that reality. We, rightfully, are being challenged to finally make all Americans equal.

As if this isn't enough, employers feel emboldened to run roughshod over unions, their members, and their contracts. It has become more of a "them vs. us" country than it has been for many decades. It is fueled by anti-labor laws and appointees to crucial positions in government who have the ability to make or break union involvement. But here's what I know . . . WE ARE CWA STRONG! We remember where we came from and how we got here! We have a clear vision of what is best for our jobs, ourselves, and our families. We have a clear vision of how we will retain union protection, fair wages, safe working conditions, affordable benefits, and job security. We will continue to make our voices heard. This year, we will make them heard with our votes.

I cannot stress the importance of our votes this year. I fully realize that we have said in the past how each election was very important, and it was. However, this is by far the MOST IMPORTANT election in modern history. That is why it is so important to make a voting plan. No matter how you intend to vote, make a plan to either vote by mail, vote early, or go to the polls. It is essential to make a plan well in advance, and to keep that plan, in order to exercise your right to vote.

This year is one for the history books. I know that together we will grow stronger from all of these challenges, which I have faith we will overcome. Thank you for all of the work you do for your members, for your families, and for our union -- CWA.

Happy Labor Day! Be safe and stay healthy!

In Solidarity,

Linda L. Hinton
Vice President
CWA District 4
